What is it?
Acupuncture is an ancient medical system based on the principle that our health is dependent on the balanced functioning of the body’s motivating energy, known as Qi. Qi is concentrated in pathways, or meridians, beneath the skin. Each main meridian is linked energetically with an organ, gland, or part of the body. When blocked, Qi cannot flow freely through the meridians, failing to nourish cells, tissues and organs, which become unbalanced.
Along these meridians lie acupuncture points where Qi is more accessible. Inserting fine needles into these acupoints incites the body’s own healing energy. The acupoints are stimulated or sedated to influence the flow of Qi, restoring the body to a state of balance.
What does it treat?
Acupuncture is effective at treating a wide range of physiological and psychological imbalances, illnesses and disharmonies. It is well known as a means of pain relief, very successful in the treatment of backache, joint problems, tennis elbow, migraines, and menstrual pain. Innately balancing, acupuncture is effective at increasing energy levels, regulating hormonal function, and combating psychological disharmonies such as stress, addiction and depression.
Traditional acupuncture considers all illnesses in terms of imbalances of energy. Therefore, acupuncture benefits almost any condition, and can be used as a preventative measure to maintain health and internal harmony.

Acupuncture is also particularly beneficial in early pregnancy when women are understandably reluctant to take medication. It can help with morning sickness, headaches, and the exhaustion often experienced during the first trimester of pregnancy.
